Web-based Software I Miss

by Pawel Brodzinski on January 8, 2007

I’m in fond of web-based applications, that’s for sure. When I received my new laptop from our beloved (in case they’re reading that) administrators I had the operating system, MS Office and some stuff like antivirus software already installed. Most of the rest of software I use often is web-based, so no installation was needed, as far as I accept version 6 of Internet Explorer. I made a quick check of what was missing there. Two things: Microsoft Project and Visio.

Working in project management these two are quite often used. They’re also a kind of standard. I’d like to use some simple web-based substitutes for those. Just basic features. Task, resources, assignments, connections and simple Gantt chart for “GProject” and basic IT shapes for “GVisio”. Vast majority of users of this couple use probably around 5% of features and they don’t need more. The rest will stay with MS Project and Visio anyway. It’s exactly like with MS Excel compared to Google spreadsheets. Have you seen pivot table in the latter? Have you used it in the former?

I guess that “GPowerPoint” is closer but nevertheless I’d appreciate if someone built applications described above. I guess that with Microsoft pricing there’s quite appealing business case for that. Hello, anyone willing to exploit the niche?

You should check out Projity’s Project-ON-Demand (http://www.projity.com) They have a complete replacement of Microsoft Project and you can open your existing Project files if you have them

Thanks for link, I’ll play with the product for sure. However, one thing look a bit obscure – they don’t reveal their pricing on the web. It always makes me a bit suspicious as it usually ends up with prices far from reasonable.

Gliffy is a very lightweight alternative to visio. I’m very pleased with it.
