If you asked your users how your application should work how they would answer? I guess:
Like our good old app, but better.
The flow of operations shouldn’t differ much. Placement of often used functions should be similar. Shortcuts should be connected with the same operations.
If you have some kind of industry standard application in your area, don’t hesitate to base on that one. If not, well, look for those applications you want to compete with.
Remember you most likely don’t bring something totally innovative which can’t be compared with any other software being on market for some time. Remember people like what they know or rather people feel comfortable with what they know. And making your users uncomfortable doesn’t make user experience skyrockets.
